Heritage Coffee: A Coffee Shop In A Chocolate Factory?

I never tire of checking out various coffee shops in cities near me. I grew up driving through Waco on my way to and from Dallas/Austin, and I would typically stop at Common Grounds back in the day. (It was seriously the only coffee shop back in the early 2000s!) These days, though, there are so many great coffee shops in the Waco area. Heritage Coffee is a new(ish) one, and it took me a little longer than usual to go check it out…not because I wasn’t excited about it, but because it’s located just a little bit north of Waco.

Heritage Coffee is a sweet little coffee shop just north of Waco. It’s located at Heritage Homestead, an agrarian and craft-based Christian community and farm that you can read all about here. (It’s 100% worth visiting!)

While you’re checking out the craft shops, historic gristmill, and underground cheese cave at Heritage Homestead, make sure you start your morning with a cup of coffee at Heritage Coffee.

They roast their own coffee, and what really sets them apart from other Waco coffee shops is that they make all of their syrups from scratch. They’re all packaged, labeled, and branded…so it’s a bit hard to tell that they’re homemade and made on site, but the syrups really are fantastic! If you’re into flavored lattes or sweet drinks, this is hands down the place to get them.

Heritage Coffee Is A Coffee Shop Inside A Chocolate Factory

Heritage Chocolate

Homestead Heritage is home to lots of fantastic eateries, and one of them is their very own Heritage Chocolates. In 2024 they moved the coffee shop to share a space with the chocolate factory, and there are giant glass windows overlooking the chocolate production space.

So while you’re sipping your cortado, you can actually watch people in the chocolate factory making their handcrafted chocolate.

The chocolate bars are available in gift displays throughout the coffee shop. Make sure you grab one to bring home with you!

The Interior Of Heritage Coffee: Great For Working/studying

There were a lot of folks already sipping their coffee at Heritage Coffee when I walked in early on a weekday morning. The space is located on the basement floor of the barn that also houses the Heritage Chocolate factory and their rentable overnight Chocolate Suites. Since it’s on the basement floor, I wouldn’t call it bright and airy…it’s a little bit dim, but that gives it a good cozy vibe.

It’s a great coffee shop for studying or working because there are several tabletop booths. There are a few comfy couches and chairs, too, in case you want to get a latte and settle in with a book or a good conversation with a friend.

Heritage Coffee Is Roasted On Site

Heritage Coffee

There are only a handful of Waco coffee shops that source and roast their own beans (Bru, Pinewood Coffee Bar, Be Kind, Thrst), so I was excited to try their own roast.

While I couldn’t get a lot of information about the coffee beans (from the barista or from the coffee shop itself), here’s my very in depth review: they were good! Fine! Haha.

I’ve had some TRULY horrible cups of coffee in my day from coffee that was roasted on site, and Heritage’s coffee wasn’t that. I’ve also had the most mind-blowingly amazing roasts, and it wasn’t that either. It wasn’t scorched and over-roasted, but it also wasn’t the most balanced and/or exciting cup of coffee in my life. (I still prefer Pinewood’s basic drip coffee to any other one in Waco.)

The Best Part Of Heritage Coffee? The Pastries

Heritage Coffee Waco

Can I be real with you for a second? There are lots of coffee shops that have cozy vibes and good coffee. One thing that sets a coffee shop above the rest for me is the pastries. Yup.

I love a dense, buttery scone or a beautifully fluffy banana nut muffin that was made from scratch that morning. Oddly, there are so many coffee shops that treat pastries as an afterthought, when in reality most of us want to eat one to pair with our coffee!

Heritage Coffee makes all of their pastries from scratch, and if you’ve ever dined at Cafe Homestead, had breakfast at Waco Waffle, or stopped by the Gristmill and ordered a homemade treat, you know how good they are at baking here! They even offer a full-day bread baking course on-site at Homestead Heritage.

All that to say: if you decide to visit Heritage Coffee, treat yourself with a pastry. You won’t regret it. 🙂
