FREE In Waco: The Waco Riverwalk

When you’re looking for fun things to do in your city (or a city you visit), it’s often paid activities: museums, great restaurants and bars, shopping, and such. But I love finding a few free things to do to squeeze in between, which is why I adore The Waco Riverwalk so much.

Waco Riverwalk-01

It’s a trail that winds around the Brazos River (the main river that flows through Waco) and has recently been updated and developed to make it even more pedestrian friendly.

Are There Things To Do On The Waco Riverwalk?

Walk and talk. The Riverwalk is incredibly pedestrian friendly, so swing by one of these Waco coffee shops and get a latte for yourself and a friend, and enjoy walking along the river together!

Waco Sculpture Zoo

See the Waco Sculpture Zoo. If you’re walking or biking along the riverwalk with kids, be sure to check out the Waco Sculpture Zoo! It’s adorable. It’s right by downtown Waco, located on the south side of the Brazos River.

It’s a series of 28 sculptures of animals. Each one represents an animal you might find in the Cameron Park Zoo. Children love running from sculpture to sculpture to see which one is coming up next!

Waco Suspension Bridge

Walk across the Waco Suspension Bridge. This historic bridge was renovated to keep it nice and safe, but it’s still an important part of history. It was built in the 1860s and it was the longest suspension bridge west of the Mississippi River, and it was an important part of the Chisholm trail, which was how cowboys drove cattle across the country.

Indian Springs Park

Check out Indian Springs Park. I love this little city park! It’s a shady area with benches, trees, fountains, and a little walking trail. It’s located on the southern end of the Waco Suspension Bridge, and you’ll see it by the towering Chisholm Trail sculptures. (Just look for the statue of the cowboy riding a horse!)

Go hiking by Cameron Park. The Waco Riverwalk goes all the way toward Cameron Park. This is the section of the Riverwalk that transitions to dirt trails instead of cement, so it’s more of a “hike” than a “walk.”

How Long Is The Waco Riverwalk?

Waco Riverwalk-09

With the new expansion that leads all the way to McLane Stadium, it’s about 7 miles around! There’s a combination of paved concrete paths as well as dirt paths.

Any Good Restaurants On The Waco Riverwalk?

Slow Rise restaurant

The best one is Slow Rise Slice House on the Brazos. It’s a HUGE pizza restaurant with great pizza, draft beer, appetizers, and big tables for groups. And it’s right on the water! Read more about Slow Rise HERE.
